"yes, yes. I'll join the bake-off"

You could hear your friend squealing through the phone as you looked at the destination display on the train slowly reaching your designated station. You stood up, gripping your baggage tightly. You sighed, it's been quite a while since you've gone back to your hometown. After the day you had an awful fight with your mom, you left home without saying goodbye. You wondered how you were going to face her.

"Over here!!" You could see your friend wave happily at you, even before the train door slid open. You smiled, waving back at her as you walked out of the train.

"you have no idea how much you have missed after you left! Oh, we must catch up!" She jumped in excitement before hugging you tightly. You laughed, returning the hug as well. As you walked with her out of the station, her boyfriend was waiting outside for the two of you.

"Hello," you smiled politely at him, hopping into the car with your friend. "So! What are you going to bake for the town's bake-off?" your friend asked, clueless that you had zero ounce of baking skills. You laughed nervously, unsure what kind of desserts you could make with such clumsy hands. "I'll think about it afterward." As you looked out the car window, snow stretching endlessly across the landscape, you responded.

The car drove through the quiet, snow-covered streets, the soft hum of the engine and the occasional crunch of tires on snow filling the silence. You glanced at your phone, scrolling through Pinterest for last-minute dessert ideas, but everything seemed difficult to make.

"We're here!" Your friend chirped, breaking your train of thought as the car rolled to a stop in front of your home. You stepped out into the cold, your friend hopping out to grab your baggage for you. You turned around to face your mom who was standing at the doorway with a weak smile. You smiled back awkwardly, avoiding further eye contact with her.

"it's time you reconnect with your mom, it's been years. Forgive and forget, alright?" Your friend whispered in your ear before handing you the bags. You sighed, waving goodbye to your friend.

"Hi, Mom," you said softly. "come on in" your mom uttered, stepping aside to let you in. As you stepped inside the place you once used to call home, the warmth of familiarity immediately surrounded you.

"I...cleaned your room so you should settle in fine. I'll be in my room if you need me." Your mom spoke before leaving you alone. You watched her every move, unsure of what to do next. You sighed deeply, heading into your old room. Memories came flooding in as you walked in. The soft bed that creaked when you sat on it, the old drawer that would get stuck from time to time, and...the broken mirror that your mom accidentally broke during the fight you had with her years ago.

"You haven't changed a single thing, huh." You said with a weak smile. You left your baggage on the floor, leaving your room. You wandered around the house, scanning over familiar rooms filled with memories.

It wasn't long before you found yourself in the living room. Everything was still in place, nothing had changed at all. As you walked around, you noticed a picture sitting on the mantel, a thick layer of dust clung to the photo. You froze as you stared at the picture. It was your graduation day photo. You and Joshua, both dressed in black gowns and caps, smiling brightly. As you looked at the picture, a sudden thought rushed into your mind.

"oh my god, that's it!" You yelled, which made your mom come out of her room. "What? What happened?" She asked worriedly. "I'm gonna pay Joshua's bakery a visit. I'll talk to you later." Your mom raised an eyebrow but didn't question you.

"Alright, have fun."

The cold air brushed against your cheeks as you made your way to the bakery. The bakery was his family's pride, it was known for its warm, inviting atmosphere and delicious pastry. The smell of fresh bread and sweet desserts would always hit your nose each time you walked inside. It was the best bakery in town. You knew you could find Joshua there, it was his second home after all.

As you walked in, the small bell above the door jingled. You were greeted by the familiar, welcoming warmth of Joshua's bakery. There he stood, behind the counter, wearing the bakery's signature apron that was dusted with flour as he worked on a tray of freshly baked cookies.

He looked up from the counter, a surprised but warm smile spread across his face.

"you came back."

"only for the holidays, yeah. I hope I'm not interrupting anything."

"of course not. It's nice to see you!" Joshua stepped away from the counter, wiping his hand clean on his apron before approaching you. "What brings you here? Need a dessert for Christmas?" you glanced at the beautiful pastries displayed on the counter. "I need help with baking..."

Joshua crossed his arms, chuckling in disbelief. "You? Baking? Never thought I'd see the day." you rolled your eyes at his comment. "My friend begged me to join the town's bake-off but little did she know, I'm no baker." You sighed.

Joshua raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "Well, this should be interesting," he said, a playful smirk tugging at his lips.

You shot him a look, feeling a mix of frustration and embarrassment. "I’m serious! I can barely bake a decent cookie without burning it."

"All alright, alright. We can start tomorrow but don't say I didn't warn you, my baking lessons come with a lot of sarcasm."

The next few days were filled with flour-dusted counters and playful banters. Besides you were trays of failed products you had made while Joshua made a ton of goods that were ready to set outside on the display. "right, now you're just showing off, aren't you." You scoffed, rolling your eyes playfully.

"Maybe," he said with a wink, making you laugh. As you continued to decorate one of the sugar cookies shaped like a Christmas tree, you glanced at Joshua to see what he was up to. The moment you lifted your eyes, you found him already staring back at you. His usual steady hands faltered, the green icing dripping onto the counter.

"what? Is there something on my face?" You asked, raising your eyebrow as you touched your face.

"no, no. There isn't, I'm...just glad you're back." He said softly, looking back at the sugar cookie. Your heart raced, you could feel it as if it was ready to jump out any moment. You managed to keep your voice steady before speaking.

"me too"

On the night of the bake-off, your gingerbread house that was crafted under Joshua's guidance did not win first place but it didn't matter to you. The two of you stood outside the hall, looking at the mesmerizing night sky. White puffs form each time we exhale or speak. "What a shame, your gingerbread house was great though!" Your friend chirped, trying to cheer you up but to be frank, you didn't need it. Winning didn't matter to you anyway. "It's alright, the price isn't everything," you reassured her, giving her shoulder a gentle squeeze.

"Oh look! It's Shua! Hello!" You turned around to see Joshua walking towards you, a warm smile on his face. "I'll leave you two to it." Your friend giggled, giving you a thumbs-up before returning to the hall.

"Well, what are you up to after the holidays?" He asked, gently leaning on the railings as he looked at you. "I'm not sure, I will have to go back though. I've got work" you sighed deeply. Part of you didn't want to leave the town you grew up in, you only left because of an argument which you kind of regret doing.

"Well, before you leave. Might as well give you this." He uttered, handing you a box tied with a red ribbon. "What's this?", you asked, looking at him. "Open it," he said, looking unusually nervous as he bit his lips, avoiding eye contact with you.

You carefully unboxed the gift, revealing a sugar cookie, crafted to perfection in the shape of a heart. Written in icing were the words 'Merry Christmas'.

You looked at him, feeling your cheeks flushed. Even though it was subtle, you understood the meaning behind it.

"I'm not much for grand gestures," he said, scratching the back of his neck. "But if you're free tomorrow, maybe we could—"

"yes," you interrupted, standing on your tippy toes to peck his cheek.

"I'd love to"

it had been years. years since you laid eyes on your first love. years since you felt his touch that never failed to leave goosebumps on your skin. years since you listened to the sound of a voice only apollo would approve of. years since you saw him.

your beloved husband who was drafted to the war. you knew it was important, you knew he had to go but.. you also knew he didn’t want to leave you just as much.

“it’ll be a time sweet heart.. but i will always come back for you. even if my feet ache and my limbs creak i’ll always find my way back.” those were the last words he’d ever spoken to you since he left.

you’d receive the letters, the small gifts.. but it was never fully the same. heesung’s side of the bed cold and empty as your heart was in those seven years.

you were out in the market, collecting groceries to be able to have something to eat for tonight as you heard the faint whispers if women passing by. until one caught your ear.

“i heard some men will be coming home from the draft today. isn’t that delightful? will your husband be returning?”

your eyes widened at the sound of that, frantically searching in your purse for your planner as your ripped it out and flipped through the pages. it had been exactly seven years since heesung left to fight off in the war.

your mind raced as you quickly paid and made your way home. you prayed to every higher power that somehow. someway. heesung could be amongst the group of men to return home. you knew better to get your hopes up but the feeling and wanting to be right made your chest tighten.

9:30 pm.

you were sat on the couch, book propped on your lap as your black cat ‘hoon’ was curled up besides you puring contently as your fingers ran through the fluffy black mess of fur.

the atmosphere felt.. weird despite the normalcy of the house. you couldn’t understand why, you’d done just about everything to force the boiling feeling down but nothing was working.

and you would have been right.. if not for the sound of the front door unlocking and heavy foot steps stepped into the house. you felt everything still.

your eyes strained on the last word read in your book, fate, as you swallowed the lump quickly filling your throat. the footsteps thumped against the wooden floor boards until they finally stopped right behind you.

letting the book slide off your lap you finally began to rise from your seat, a shaking breath pushing from your throat as the words meekly left your vocal cords. “is.. is it you..?”

your voice was answered with silence, if not for the breathing you’d believe you were all alone and this was a figment of your imagination. it wasn’t until the hand wrapping around your wrist made you spin around, quick enough to give you whiplash as you faced him.

“you look.. just as the same as i left.” heesung’s voice was hushed and quiet, coming out in a low croak as the tears welded his eyes and body trembled before you. your body collapsed onto his as his arms quickly caught you, engulfing you in a hug that surly represented the seven years the two of you spent apart.

“i-i thought.. god hee..” your voice wavered as the tears spilled down your eyes, pushing your face into his chest as you cried into it. his uniform beginning gaining moisture from your tears as he ran his calloused and cold hands through your hair.

“ah ah ah. remember what i told you my love?” he hummed softly, cupping your face with his hands as he leaned in to press his lips to your temple. “i will always find my way back.” his lips lingered on your temple as they vibrated against your skin, making your heart melt and breathing begin to steady as you nodded in response.

your husband was back, back home. back safe in your arms as you were just as safe in his, your life finally going back to how it should have always fucking been.

10:47 am.

the insistent knocking at the front door shook you awake, breathing unsteady as you groaned and shuffled to turn over and meet your sleepy husbands face. a small smile spreading as you rested your hand against his cold cheek. “good morning my love..”

heesung’s smile widened as he heard you speak, chuckling softly as he pressed his lips to the palm of your hand. “good morning sweet heart.. who’s at the door?” he hummed softly, eyebrows frowning as the knocking continued.

you simply shrugged as you quickly held him still, smiling as you shook your head. “i’ll get it. you just got home, relax love.” you groggily got out of bed, pouting as you let go of your husband and dragged your feet to the door with a hard sigh.

as you reached the door you could hear movement from the bed room, shaking your head with a laugh as you knew heesung was probably coming to accompany you despite your insistence.

as you pulled the door open your eyebrows knitted together, head cocking to the side as two men in blue uniforms stood at the door. uniforms much too similar to the one your husband wore.

“can.. can i help you gentleman?” your voice cut through the now heavy silence as your eyes darted between the two, their faces almost grim as the taller of the men sighed hoarsely and spoke with a gruff voice.

“we are looking for the spouse of first sergeant lee heesung.” the soldier’s words confused you, a bit taken aback as you chuckled softly. “thats me? but i don’t understand why ask for me and not my husband?”

both soldiers face dropped even more at your sentence, looking at one another then back at you as they swallowed hard. “we’re.. we’re deeply sorry for the news we bare..”

your hands began to shake, then your arms, then your legs, until your entire body was vibrating. the shaky breath that left your lips felt as if your lungs were being drained from your body as the words pierced your ears like a needle.

“we’re terribly sorry to inform you but, first sergeant lee was amongst the men killed during the war. his body was just recovered from the grounds.” the soldiers had their head hung low, you could hear the waver in their voices as one of them held out your husbands bag and name tag before you.

you didn’t understand, you couldn’t understand. he was there, heesung came home, he kissed you, he hugged you, you smelled him. how was this possible.

your thoughts came to an abrupt end as you could feel a presence behind you, turning around slowly as you saw.. heesung standing there. a smile filled with nothing but sorrow plastered on his face as he whispered faintly.

“i will always come back for you.”

This was written as part of @kflixnet writing exchange. @gyuwrites I hope you like it 🥹🫶

You were never really one to love the beach. You liked the aesthetic- the beautiful blue ocean, the sand, the way the orange setting sun looked as it sunk into the sea’s depths. The pros, however, were outweighed by the cons- the blistering heat from the sand, the irritation said sand would cause against your skin, the thought of all the animals in the world pissing in the water you were swimming in, and the way the bright sun made it impossible to see clearly.

Your boyfriend begged you to go the beach though, and you couldn’t deny him that joy.

So, you packed up your cooler, umbrellas, towels, and a good book to make your beach outing as tolerable as possible. Mingyu had tossed off his shirt before you could even see the ocean, so as he quickly set up the umbrellas you got to indulge in his beauty.

You were set under the umbrellas, sunglasses on as you watched him leap in and out for the water. Between wanting to build a proper sandcastle and wanting to be in the water he was truly having a great time.

You took out the disposable camera you had packed and whistled loudly, snapping a picture when he lifted his head up from the sand castle he was focused on. He forced an obnoxious grin once he saw what was in your hands, and you giggled as you took a second picture.

“My turn!” He called, leaping from his spot and splattering sand everywhere as he took the camera from you.

“You got sand all over me!” You pouted as he giggled, taking a picture of your face.

“You’re so cute,” he cooed, kneeling down to be at your eye level where you sat.

“I think you’re cuter,” you gently squeezed his cheek that somehow had sand on it. Before you could protest, he grabbed your face and pressed a kiss on your lips.

“Hey!” You shouted between giggles as he ran off to the ocean, escaping your wrath as you were now covered in sand.

“You can’t catch me!” He taunted and you sighed, leaning back on the towel you were on just to laugh. The beach may not be your favorite place, but you were with your favorite person, so it was still better than great.

"okay okay, I'm coming. stop banging the door, it's going to break."

"who knocks on people's door during midnight when you're supposed to be in bed?" jeonghan grumbled, rubbing his eyes as he stumbled his way to get the door.

"again?" jeonghan wasn't wide awake but he knew who was at his front doorway, he knew it all too well. it was you, the ol' "scary" villian everyone projects you to be.

"what do you mean, again? excuse you, this was only the...2...4...6...well counting this one so 7..well the 7th time i came to your doorstep so don't be dramatic." you spoke and jeonghan sighed in disbelief, dragging his face with his palm.

"mhm, so what brings you here? at my doorstep?"

"i need...what i need is..help"

"yeah, I'll wait for the magic word as you bleed."

"fine, please." you scoffed at him and he laughed at you. pretty sure no one can laugh at you but for some reason, you didn't mind his laughing.

"come on in, madam" he looked at you cheekily and pushed his face hard. you sat on the sofa, still in pain at that as you waited for jeonghan to get the first aid kit

"here. a cup of black coffee like usual?"

"with milk today because im craving for milk"

"what are you? a toddler?" he joked around as he made your coffee. you rolled your eyes and continued patching up your wound.

just in time, jeonghan handed you your coffee. "so, I'd like to know a few things, two things to be exact." jeonghan uttered as he crossed his arms.

"what?"

"why were you wounded and why did you come here."

"I'm not telling you the first part but the latter, you do realise you're the only one who doesn't try to kill me even when I'm literally in front of you, right?" you looked away and stared at the window.

"there wasn't a reason to."

jeonghan sighed as he stood up, looking awfully upset but you didn't know why. he walked to the door of his room but stopped there.

"you know, today could've been marked as our 1 year anniversary if you never left."

[ 5:18pm ] the sky was turning into a blend of purples and blues on your eyes as you and gunil strolled around the nearby park. the lanterns were guiding you, sky getting darker and darker. hues of navy blue started falling down, a sign to go back home soon.

“you’re shivering” gunil hummed and you just shook your head. you had a scarf, gloves and a coat. maybe it was still too cold for such a coat, though.

“it’s fine. we’ll drink some tea to warm up once we’re back” you smiled softly at him.

the yellow beam of street lights highlighted the small crease between his brows.

without speaking, gunil took off his puffer jacket and tugged at your coat.

“let’s swap. i want you to be warm now” he said. you knew protesting won’t do - he’s way foo stubborn of a gentleman.

gunil helped you take off your coat and put on his jacket, then throwing your coat on his shoulders. your hands interlocked together again as you started going back home

“thank you” you grinned, looking at him.

his heart thumped in his chest, hoping you wouldn't catch on that he accidentally forgot to take a small, velvety box out of his jacket's pocket.
